Girlhood

It all began when Harriet was at nursery. She made some tight knit friendships. Far quicker and deeper than her older brother ever did. “The Girls” as they were nicknamed by the nursery teachers were a happy 5 some who always sort each other out amongst the hustle and bustle of free play. Their friendships continued into reception and despite the covid separation it was like they’d never been away from each other. They held hands, goaded bigger brothers, did each others hair, hung upside down at the park, made up dances, climbed trees and played pets and owners. 

It was hard to move schools and to another part of the region when Harriet was 5. The second night after we moved we were back to our old village for a sleepover. 

As all kids do, our kids adapted to the change. But my girl, missed her girls. Her new friends were just friends. Not her Best Friends.

As a Mother you long for your children to be happy and healthy. Even more so when you make a decision that will change all they have ever known.

Well, Taylor. Swift of course. She changed things. With our Cheerleading companion, and just a “friend” from school we headed to Taylor in Edinburgh with our 7 year olds. A dream for these two Swifties and a moment in my life that as an adult looking in on all the Gen z’s I realised that Girlhood friendships make up such an important part of a girls life.

H now calls G her Bestie and I am thrilled she has found her 1, amongst others to complete First School with. 

We still see our “girls” and they will always be “the girls” to both of us and I hope it never fades. We have our life girls in those girls and new life girls in these girls. They will always share memories together and create new ones. They will support each other, be silly together, share their first experiences and cry together along the way.  This is Girlhood. 

Est. 2016 when my baby girl was born and my journey through Girlhood changed into being a Girl Mum. Forever. X
